Most of what you hear about solar component sourcing is marketing. "Tier-1, ISO certified, DCR module, German technology" - strung together to make a quote sound premium. Here's what the terms actually mean and which ones you should care about.
Tier-1 vs Tier-2: it's a bankability rating, not a quality rating
This is the single most misused phrase in Indian solar sales.
Tier-1 is a quarterly classification published by BloombergNEF. A manufacturer is Tier-1 if its modules have been used in projects financed on a non-recourse basis by at least six different commercial banks in the past two years.
What this tells you:
- Major banks have done their own diligence and are comfortable lending against this brand
- The company has scale, financial stability, and is likely to honour 25-year warranties
- They're a real manufacturer, not a re-labeller
What it does not tell you:
- That the panels are technically better than a Tier-2 brand
- That every cell line within the brand performs equally
- That the specific batch you're buying is from the brand's primary fab
Tier-2 brands include many technically excellent manufacturers who simply don't have the banking footprint yet - and also many genuinely lower-quality outfits. The label is a starting filter, not a verdict.
What we actually check, beyond Tier-1:
- ALMM List-I - mandatory for any project claiming net metering, subsidy, or government scheme
- BIS certification (IS 14286 / IS/IEC 61215 / 61730) - mandatory for grid-connected use in India
- Salt-mist + ammonia resistance for coastal sites and poultry / dairy farms
- PID-free declaration for systems where the array can sit at high voltage
DCR vs Non-DCR: when it matters and when it's a sales trick
DCR = Domestic Content Requirement. A DCR module has both the cell and the module manufactured in India. Non-DCR modules typically use imported cells (often from China or Southeast Asia) assembled into modules in India or imported whole.
DCR matters in exactly these cases:
- CPSU / government tenders that mandate domestic content
- PM-KUSUM scheme components
- Certain DISCOM-procured rooftop tenders
- Any project claiming the Sovereign Green Bond allocation or specific PLI-linked benefits
DCR does not matter for:
- Private commercial / industrial rooftop projects
- Standard residential rooftop (including PM Surya Ghar - the scheme requires ALMM-listed, not DCR-specific)
- Open-access projects
DCR modules typically cost ₹2–₹4/Wp more than Non-DCR equivalents. Paying that premium when your project doesn't need it is pure margin for the seller.
Action item: before accepting a DCR-priced quote, ask "what scheme or tender requires DCR for my project?" If there isn't a clean answer, you're being upsold.
Inverters: don't optimise the wrong axis
Panels are 25-year assets. Inverters are 10–13 year assets that will be replaced once during the plant's life. What matters:
- Local service centre in your city (not "pan-India network")
- Standard 5-year warranty, extendable to 10 years for ~3–5% of inverter cost
- String-level monitoring, not just inverter-level
- THD < 3% at full load (matters for sensitive industrial loads)
- Anti-islanding and grid-support functions compliant with CEA regulations
Brands with strong India service footprints in 2026: Sungrow, Solis, Fronius, SMA, ABB/Fimer, Growatt (mid-tier). We avoid generic "OEM" inverters whose service flow goes through a single Mumbai/Bengaluru office.
The BoS components that actually decide 20-year reliability
Balance of System is 15–20% of project cost and the source of roughly 80% of long-term failures. This is where corner-cutting hides.
MC4 connectors
- Original Stäubli MC4 is the standard. Period.
- "MC4-compatible" connectors from generic Chinese brands fail in 3–7 years, especially in coastal and high-humidity locations
- Crimping must be done with the original Stäubli crimping tool - hand-crimped connectors are the #1 cause of arc faults
- Each connector pair has a single-mate-only design philosophy in some specs; never re-use a disconnected MC4 in a permanent install
DC and AC cabling
- DC string cable: 4 sqmm or 6 sqmm, double-insulated, UV-resistant, TÜV-certified solar cable (EN 50618). Not regular PVC house wire.
- AC cable: sized for ≤ 1% voltage drop at full inverter output across the run length. On long runs (>30 m), this often pushes you to 10 sqmm or 16 sqmm.
- Copper, not aluminium, for any DC string under 60 m
- Conduit or cable tray - never loose-laid on the roof under direct sun
Mounting structure
- Hot-Dip Galvanised (HDG) MS, minimum 80 microns zinc coating - survives 20+ years in Hyderabad
- Pre-Galvanised (GP) sections - cheaper but corrode within 5–7 years at cut edges
- Painted MS - avoid entirely; the paint fails inside 3–4 years and the structure rusts from inside
- Aluminium - premium option for coastal sites; ~25–30% more expensive than HDG
- Wind-load design certificate from a structural engineer, especially for tilted ground-mount or tall canopy structures
Earthing and lightning protection
- Copper earthing, not GI strip - GI corrodes at the joint within 5 years
- Minimum 3 separate earth pits (DC, AC, LA) bonded at a common bus
- Type 1 + Type 2 SPDs on both DC and AC side
- Lightning Arrestor with a clear protection zone covering the entire array

If a quote is dramatically cheaper than the band above, something on this list - usually the BoS - has been swapped for a generic substitute that will fail in years 4–8. The panels and inverter are easy to compare on a datasheet; the BoS is where you actually need to ask for brand names and certifications, line by line.
